Women Join Kigali #CarFreeDay to Promote Community and Family Well-being
On June 2, 2024, city residents turned out in large numbers for the bi-monthly Kigali #CarFreeDay. Notably, a significant number of women participated in this event. Women are continuously encouraged to engage in regular physical activities to enhance their overall well-being.
The event saw the participation of several high-profile figures, including the First Lady, Mrs. Jeannette Kagame, the Speaker of the Rwandan Parliament, the Minister of Sports, the Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, the Minister of Local Government, the Mayor of Kigali, and other officials.
As is customary, participants were screened for non-communicable diseases such as high blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and body mass index (BMI). On this special occasion, women were also provided with instructions on how to self-test for breast and skin cancers.
In her address to the participants, the Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, Dr. Valentine Uwamariya, highlighted the benefits of regular physical activity for both individuals and families.
"Engaging in sports and maintaining a healthy diet not only alleviates stress but also prevents various diseases. For family members, it improves relationships," the Minister emphasized.
The Minister further noted that Rwanda's achievements over the past 30 years have been largely due to the good health of its citizens. She added that sustaining productivity in the next 30 years will require citizens who are healthy and physically fit.
To lead a healthier lifestyle, it is essential to exercise regularly. Aim for at least 45 minutes of physical activity, three times a week.
