The City of Kigali convenes stakeholders' meeting to discuss youth employment strategies

The City of Kigali Mayor Dusengiyumva Samuel on 7th March 2024 led a pivotal gathering uniting stakeholders from public/private sectors, non-government organizations (NGOs), and development partners.

The meeting aimed to discuss and brainstorm on the role of the private sector, public sector, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), and development partners in skills enhancement and employment promotion, especially through workplace learning in the city of Kigali which can help to reduce the high rate of unemployment through enhancing the skills of job seekers that are needed on the current labour market as well as linking them to potential employers.

The Mayor highlighted that while academic skills are valuable, they alone may not suffice for graduates to secure their preferred job offers. He encouraged them to continually pursue learning opportunities such as internships to increase their competitiveness in the job market.

Mayor Samuel highlighted the importance of practical experience alongside academic qualifications. He urged graduates to engage in internships and other learning opportunities to better prepare for the job market.

“We greatly appreciate your contributions to reducing unemployment, particularly among the youth, who make up a significant portion of Rwanda’s population. We must join forces to create more job opportunities for this demographic. We also need to encourage our youth to broaden their horizons beyond white-collar jobs and seize the opportunities that surround them,” the Mayor stated.

The City of Kigali, in partnership with its stakeholders, organizes the Kigali Job Net fair. This event brings together job seekers and employers from various sectors to highlight available job opportunities, fostering a direct connection between the workforce and industry.
