The City of Kigali is collecting citizens’ needs and priorities for the next Fiscal Year 2024/2025

The City of Kigali has started community outreach programs intended to gather ideas that will inform the planning process of the next Fiscal Year 2024/2025. This was announced in the Community gatherings (Inteko z’Abaturage) held on Tuesday 21st November 2023 in all villages across the City of Kigali.

The Inteko z’Abaturage are convened every Tuesday of the week and it is part of homegrown solutions whereby the community meet to discuss matters of importance related to Government programs and solve some pressing issues within their vicinity.  

The guidelines from the Ministry of Local Government dated 6th November 2023, requested the entities under local government to involve citizens in the planning phase of the next fiscal year. The campaign that shall last one month kicked of countrywide from 14th November 2023 and it will end on 14th December 2023.

While addressing citizens in Nyarugunga Sector, Kicukiro District, Dr. Merard Mpabwanamaguru, the City Vice Mayor in charge of Urbanization and Infrastructure said that the city has been heavily relying on their needs to plan for each Fiscal Year and requested them to provide ideas that shall inform the planning of the Fiscal Year 2024/2025.

The City Vice Mayor said that from the ideas that the City got from the citizens in the current Fiscal Year 2023/2024, the City of Kigali received 483 ideas from citizens dominated by those related to infrastructure and citizens welfare.

He went further to mention that based on these ideas, the city has started construction works of putting asphalt in 13 roads of 45.77 km under Phase II of Kigali Infrastructure Project (KIP). In addition, the City of Kigali intends to add more 9 roads of 30km in this ongoing Fiscal Year under KIP phase III.

The other activities include: constructing neighborhoods roads in collaboration with citizens whereby citizens contribute 30% and the City of Kigali contributes 70% of the total budget needed, supporting vulnerable communities through house construction and renovation, job creation to deal with unemployment, among others.
