Defence and Security Citizen Outreach Programme Concludes with Awards for Outstanding Sectors in Combating Malnutrition and Promoting Sanitation.

On June 19, 2024, the City of Kigali hosted an event to mark the conclusion of the Defence and Security Citizen Outreach Programme at the Kimisagara Youth Centre.  The City of Kigali Mayor, Dusengiyumva Samuel, the Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, as well as representatives from the Rwanda National Police and Rwanda Defence Force were present in that ceremony.

The programme recognized  different Sectors that excelled in promoting sanitation, combating malnutrition, and reducing child stunting. Kimisagara Sector of the Nyarugenge District emerged as the overall winner within the City of Kigali and was awarded a vehicle to support hygiene operations.

Launched on March 1, 2024, the three-month initiative took place in Kigali and other regions across the country. Notably, the City of Kigali benefitted from the construction of the Rutunga Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre, a project undertaken by the Rwanda National Police, the Rwanda Defence Force, and their stakeholders.

In the closing ceremony of defence and Security Citizen Outreach Programme, Rutunga ECD Centre were inaugurated and officials also visited the Nyarurama Medicalized Health Centre, where security forces provided specialized health services to local residents.

Mayor Dusengiyumva Samuel highlighted the centre's significant role in combating malnutrition and stunting among children in the surrounding community.

Minister of Health Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana praised the security forces for their efforts to improve the socio-economic well-being of citizens beyond their primary mandate of maintaining security.

“We are grateful for these services that enable thousands of Rwandans across the country to access specialized health care in their communities. It is noteworthy that over five thousand Rwandans have received eye tests and medications, marking a significant milestone in Rwanda's health sector,” Dr. Nsanzimana stated.

Over the last three months, this initiative has addressed human security concerns across various areas, including healthcare, education, environmental sustainability, public infrastructure, and utilities. Notably, 13 bridges and 31 homes have been constructed for families in need, and 15 Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers have been established.
