PRESS STATEMENT: IMPLEMENTING DIRECTIVE TO RELOCATE COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES FROM RESIDENTIAL HOUSES TO DESIGNATED COMMERCIAL AND OFFICE ZONES
Kigali, 29th March 2017.
Following City of Kigali directive to relocate commercial activities from residential houses to designated commercial and office zones, also following subsequent communication to the concerned property owners and the general public, the City of Kigali reminds all concerned persons that the deadline for relocation is approaching and, starting 1st April 2017 City authorities and local leaders intend to begin inspections to implement the directive.
The implementation of this directive will be done in phases and we plan to start with offices operating in residential houses. Over 150 offices were surveyed as having been operating in residential houses.
A number of property owners have appealed to the City of Kigali for extensions and those that have presented justifiable reasons have been granted more time- these include having already paid rent for a longer time before the directive was issued and those that had been granted change of use for their property.
We wish to call upon those that have not adhered to this directive to move their activities to designated zones as stipulated by the master plan. The City of Kigali remains at your disposal for any one in need of clarification or guidance.
