This Sunday 5^th May 2019, President Paul Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Kagame joined residents of Kigali City for the bi-monthly Car Free day, the mass sports and exercise activities organized by the City of Kigali to promote healthy living.

The Car Free Day, is a fitness exercise involving jogging, cycling, skating among other physical activities that occurs a twice a month.

In his remarks to the participants at RRA grounds, the president encouraged the youth to be beneficiaries of Car free day as the future generation of the country.

He said “This is not just about having fun, it is also about living a healthy life. Let’s continue to uphold this practice. Good and healthy living also contributes to building our country.”

“We have seen that other countries have taken up this same practice. This is a sign that we are doing the right thing,” he added.

In different sites in Kigali City, the exercise brings together city residents from all walks of life.

President Paul Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Kagame have participated in the car free day at different occasions and this has encouraged more city residents and visitor to take part in the sports activity.

Kigali Car Free Day now expanded to all the districts of the City of Kigali. In addition to the RRA grounds, Kicukiro district has the site of IPRC Kigali grounds, Gasabo district has the  site of Independent University of Kigali (ULK) grounds and Nyarugenge district sports activities take place  at Maison des Jeunes in Kimisagara

Kigali Car Free Day was initiated by the City of Kigali in 2016 to promote healthy living in the City. The Car free day is aimed at cabbing non-communicable diseases through sports activities and also reducing car emissions by closing off some roads to cars.
