Dusengiyumva Samuel sworn in as the new City of Kigali Mayor

Friday, 15 December - The extraordinary City Council meeting held in the City Hall elected Samuel Dusengiyumva as the new Mayor of the City of Kigali with a victory of 532 out of 638 votes cast.

Dusengiyumva is the former Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Local Government, garnered 532 out of 638 votes cast in a poll at the City Hall, the position he was competing with Rose Baguma, Secretary of the Council and Director General of Education Policy and Analysis at the Ministry of Education.

The election of the City Mayor followed the swearing-in of Samuel Dusengiyumva and Solange Ayanone as new members of the City of Kigali Council, an event that was presided over by the High Court.

Addressing the City Council, the City of Kigali Mayor thanked the President of the Republic for the trust bestowed upon him to serve as the City of Kigali Mayor. He pledged to work with the city residents and other officials the city to advance the general welfare of the city residents and the implementation of the Kigali City Master Plan 2050.

“I will strive to continue making Kigali a city of urban excellence by focusing on city residents’ welfare, listening to them carefully and attach to their concerns as well as enhance strong collaboration of different key players in the implementation of the Kigali City Master plan 2050,” said the City of Kigali Mayor.

The Minister of Local Government Jean Claude Musabyimana who officiated the event requested the City of Kigali Mayor to build from the achievements realized and forge strong partnership of public and private institutions, non-government institutions, faith-based organizations among others. The Mayor was also requested to create more sustainable jobs to curb high rate of unemployment especially in the youth.

Dusengiyumva and Ayanone were appointed members of the City  Council by President Paul Kagame Thursday, December 14. In the other appointments, Pudence Rubingisa, the outgoing City of Kigali Mayor was appointed Governor of Eastern Province.
