Delegates of the Multilateral Initiative on Malaria Society Conference joined city residents in Kigali CarFreeDay

On Sunday, 21st April 2024, Kigali residents turned out in large numbers for the bi-monthly Kigali Car Free Day, demonstrating the city’s commitment to health and community engagement. This edition was particularly notable as it coincided with the attendance of delegates from across the African continent, who was in Rwanda for the 8th Multilateral Initiative on Malaria Society Conference, held from 21st to 27th April 2024, under the theme: “Grassroots mobilization to end malaria: invest, innovate and integrate”.

Participants engaged in a variety of physical activities such as running, jogging, group workouts, cycling, skateboarding, dancing, and various games, showcasing the vibrant spirit of the city.

A key feature of the Kigali Car Free Day is its focus on health. Participants availed themselves of free medical check-ups aimed at the prevention and management of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), including hypertension, diabetes, respiratory diseases, and eye health. In a show of solidarity with the fight against malaria, attendees also had the opportunity to donate blood, contributing to the well-being of the wider community.

The event served as a platform to raise awareness about malaria prevention and control, leading up to World Malaria Day on 25th April 2024.

Mrs. Urujeni Martine, the City of Kigali Vice Mayor in charge of Socio-Economic Affairs, expressed her gratitude to the residents for their dedication to health: “I commend all of you who joined us today. Prioritizing your health is paramount. Let’s also adhere to all preventive measures against malaria, including the use of mosquito nets and following other recommended guidelines to help eradicate this disease,” said Urujeni.

Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, the Minister of Health, addressed the participants, highlighting the significance of the day: “Today’s event marks a momentous occasion where we, alongside our esteemed guests, have united in a grand sporting event, signifying a major step forward in the fight for a malaria-free Rwanda.”

He said that individuals who regularly exercise tend to have stronger immune systems, making them more resistant to malaria and other non-communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart attacks, and others.

Kigali Car Free Day, held on the first and third Sunday of every month, offers a multitude of benefits for the city’s residents and environment. It’s a day dedicated for promoting healthier lifestyles and sustainable living.
