BAL Guests and Basketball Community Celebrate African Day with Umuganda
In celebration of African Day on May 25, the City of Kigali in collaboration with Imbuto Foundation and the Basketball Africa League (BAL) organized an Umuganda event at the Kimironko Sports and Community Space.
Participants contributed to enhancing the community area by constructing the foundation and walls for a tennis court and mini-football pitch, as well as cleaning and varnishing the basketball court walls.
Clare Akamanzi, the Chief Executive Officer of NBA Africa, highlighted the importance of Umuganda, emphasizing its role in promoting community service and cooperation.
“Umuganda is a vital initiative that brings communities together to address issues and solve problems. It underscores the need for collaboration and teamwork, much like in sports,” Akamanzi stated.
The City of Kigali Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva praised BAL for their trust in the country and particularly in Kigali.
The Mayor noted that these new facilities will improve the well-being of Kimironko and neighboring communities. He expressed gratitude to various partners for supporting the city's efforts to expand community playgrounds and engage the youth in diverse sports activities.
"A big shoutout to BAL for choosing Kigali as the venue for the BAL finals! To all Kigali residents: let's create unforgettable moments during these games! To our distinguished guests, embrace the beauty and offerings of our city during your stay,” Dusengiyumva added.
The Kimironko Sports and Community Space project, implemented by the City of Kigali in collaboration with the Imbuto Foundation, is now in its second phase of construction. Upon completion, this community space will feature courts and pitches for various sports, a youth corner, a mini-library, a mental health safe space, and other health services and facilities to promote healthy lifestyles.
