172 households resettled under Mpazi Rehousing Project

On 14 May 2025, 172 families were allocated homes in Mpazi, Gitega Sector, Nyarugenge District, as part of the recently completed Mpazi Rehousing Project, which includes 688 housing units.

These families had provided land for the development of housing, a market and a wood workshop. An additional 34 families affected by road construction in Gitega were also included. Homes were allocated based on a professional valuation of the property they previously owned.

Residents expressed gratitude for their new homes. Akimana Marie Rose, a mother of four, said, “Many knew this area had a bad reputation, but it’s completely different now. The old houses were uncomfortable; these new ones are modern, and we’re very happy.”

Another resident, Umutoni Clarisse, shared her relief: “Where I used to live, we feared the house might collapse in heavy rains. Now, I can sleep peacefully. These houses are strong, and the area, once muddy, now has good roads.”

Emma Claudine Ntirenganya, Director General of Communication and Education at the City of Kigali, described how the project ensures fair housing distribution for landowners and low-income families: “We build homes on land provided by residents, assess the value of their properties, and replace old houses with new ones of equivalent worth.”

She added, “So far, 688 homes have been completed, adding to the 105 already here, making a total of 793. Some families receive more than one house depending on their property’s original value.”

Addressing concerns about property ownership, Emma provided clarification: “Today, we provided houses to those who already owned land and property in the area and were compensated. These individuals will receive ownership documents for their new homes, allowing them to continue possessing property as they did before”.

Emma urged residents to maintain their homes: “We encourage people to take care of their houses and the surrounding infrastructure. These homes are theirs, and they should ensure proper upkeep to preserve them for future generations.”

The Mpazi model will continue in this area and be extended to other parts of the city, including Nyabisindu and Nyagatovu in Gasabo District, as well as in Kicukiro District.
