The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has awarded trophies to two districts of Kigali city for conducting a well coordinated presidential election.

Kicukiro and Gasabo districts were awarded for most valid votes and high voter turn up respectively by the commission’s Executive Secretary on Tuesday evening.

Addressing the occasion, NEC’s Executive Secretary Charles Munyaneza, said that out of the three districts in Kigali city, Kicukiro District was awarded a cup of emerging the best with the highest voter turnout of 97.97 percent while Gasabo District had the highest valid percentage of votes of 99.76.

NEC also awarded three sectors for their best performance in the presidential elections and they include Kacyiru in Gasabo District, Gitega in Nyarugenge District and Kigarama sector in Kicukiro District. Munyaneza thanked all whose who participated in the elections. "The high performance in the just concluded elections is a sign of maturity, politically and socially, in the country and I advise you to keep up this spirit because it will help us achieve great heights in terms of developments in various aspects of life" Munyaneza said.

The Vice Chairperson of NEC, Fatuma Harerimana, thanked Kigali City Council for the good collaboration with the commission before and during the elections which she said was one of the factors that enabled districts to perform very well.

Munyaneza told The New Times that the function was aimed at appreciating various government authorities for their contributions in the Presidential election that were held on August 9.

He also revealed that the general percentage of voter turnout in Nyarugenge, Gasabo and Kicukiro districts was 95.08 percent and 98.38 in terms of valid votes.
